چکیده
Ab stract Use-wear and tech no log i cal stud ies sug gest that Natufian flint as sem blages share sev eral char ac ter is tics with Mesolithic as sem blages of Eu rope, as both re gions show an ex ten sive pro duc tion of mi cro-lithic tools mostly de voted to an i mal pro cure ment and ex ploi ta tion. In the Lev ant, this as so ci a tion seems to be rooted in pre vi ous cul tural tra di tions. In con trast to flint tools, ground stone tools show the de vel op ment of a new tech nol ogy partly re lated to the ex ploi ta tion of plants. This pa per dis cusses the im pli ca tions and sym bolic sig nif i cance of this flint ver sus ground stone tool di chot omy for our un der stand ing of Natufian sub sis tence and plant ex ploi ta tion be hav ior.

Composite Sickles and Cereal Harvesting Methods at 23,000-Years-Old Ohalo II, Israel
Use-wear analysis of five glossed flint blades found at Ohalo II, a 23,000-years-old fisher-hunter-gatherers' camp on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, Northern Israel, provides the earliest evidence for the use of composite cereal harvesting tools. The wear traces indicate that tools were used for harvesting near-ripe semi-green wild cereals, shortly before grains are ripe and disperse naturall...

Ab stract It has been sug gested since the be gin ning of pre his toric re search in the Lev ant, that the Natufians used stone mor tars for the pro cess ing of ce re als and/or other veg e tal re sources, though di rect ev i dence is still lack ing. A re cent de tailed study of more than 100 bed rock mor tars and cupmarks in di cates that, a) they are found in many Late Natufian sites, re gard...
متن کاملExperimental Barley Flour Production in 12,500-Year-Old Rock-Cut Mortars in Southwestern Asia
Experimental archaeology at a Natufian site in the Southern Levant documents for the first time the use of 12,500-year-old rock-cut mortars for producing wild barley flour, some 2,000 to 3,000 years before cereal cultivation. Our reconstruction involved processing wild barley on the prehistoric threshing floor, followed by use of the conical mortars (a common feature in Natufian sites), thereby...

The archaeological record indicates that elephants must have played a significant role in early human diet and culture during Palaeolithic times in the Old World. However, the nature of interactions between early humans and elephants is still under discussion. Elephant remains are found in Palaeolithic sites, both open-air and cave sites, in Europe, Asia, the Levant, and Africa. In some cases e...
متن کاملUse-Wear Patterns on Wild Macaque Stone Tools Reveal Their Behavioural History
Burmese long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea) are one of a limited number of wild animal species to use stone tools, with their tool use focused on pounding shelled marine invertebrates foraged from intertidal habitats. These monkeys exhibit two main styles of tool use: axe hammering of oysters, and pound hammering of unattached encased foods. In this study, we examined macroscopic u...
